Who would have imagined when Richard Petty
won the first race held in Dover in 1969 that the speedway would grow to
such an enormous size? With that growth has come coverage of the two
NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race weekends from major media in the
Washington-Baltimore-Philadelphia area. In fact, the two NASCAR
tripleheader race weekends pull fans from New England to the Carolinas
and many race fans in the Mid-Atlantic states consider Dover
International Speedway as their home track.
The two NASCAR race weekends have also
proved to have a huge economic impact on the state of Delaware. An
independent study conducted in 2001 concluded that Dover Motorsports,
Inc. and Dover Downs Gaming & Entertainment contribute $403 million a
year to the Delaware economy. Each NASCAR race weekend brings in an
estimated $150 million to the Delaware economy alone.
